JJ Wetherington MS, LAT, ATC, BCS-O

JJ Wetherington, MS, LAT, ATC, BCS-O, is a clinical athletic trainer at St. Luke’s Sports Medicine in Boise, Idaho, working alongside a fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon. He also serves as a preceptor for St. Luke’s CAATE-accredited orthopedic residency program and previously directed the program from 2020 to 2024.

JJ began his career in 2009 at Flagler College, providing care for men’s soccer and baseball before completing an orthopedic athletic training residency at St. Luke’s in 2014. He later joined Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he developed and directed its athletic training residency (2015–2017) while maintaining clinical practice.

Returning to St. Luke’s in 2017, JJ now focuses on clinical care and assists in the operating room, specializing in shoulder pathologies. He holds adjunct and affiliate faculty appointments with A.T. Still University and Indiana State University, contributing to both institutions’ Doctor of Athletic Training programs.

A leader in advancing athletic training practice, JJ previously co-led the NATA COPA Athletic Trainers in the Physician Practice Workgroup and now serves on the BOC Specialty Council, helping develop the orthopedic specialty certification. He is also a board member of ATPPS.

A published author and national presenter, JJ’s work centers on athletic training specialization, residency development, and physician practice efficiency. He earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Lenoir-Rhyne University (2007) and a post-professional master’s from Indiana University (2009).
